THE VOID IN A PERFECT WORLD (2024) by speculative media artist Lingyi Zhang is presented daily on the Media Wall at arebyte, which turns the Digital Art Centre’s window into an evolving exhibition space.

The video represents the third phase of Zhang’s series THE VOID BEYOND FLAWLESSNESS, a project which explores the place of AI within the power frameworks of ocularcentrism —the cultural tendency to privilege sight over the other senses— through moving image, interactive installation and visual publication. For this work, the artist ran personal photographs through AI tools trained on massive corporate datasets, transforming them again and again into standardized, “perfect” images. The video documents this transition: from memories appearing in their raw form to their eventual erosion through algorithmic kitsch.

Zhang captures how our private experiences are gruadually invaded by, and fused with, the logic of algorythmic aesthetic hegemony. On screen, a shifting, turbulent ocean of images spills, reflecting the contemporary condition of alienation in relating to a world increasingly mediated by technology. The work invites the audience to navigate this fluctuating perceptual experiment, seeking an exit for the self within the digital void.
