Introduction to 3D scanning, modelling and printing with enorê

  • arebyte Digital Art Centre 25-27 Camden Road London, England, NW1 9LN United Kingdom (map)

In this two-part workshop, you will be introduced to the basics of 3D modelling and scanning technology, and how it can be a powerful tool for worldbuilding and creating narrative work. We will learn about freely available apps and software we can use to scan and model objects, and how to think about them through a digital perspective. After scanning objects and people around us, we will learn how to import them to Blender for further processing and setting a scene for video, still image or 3D printing.

Session 1: 3D modelling and scanning [Sat 10 Oct]

This introductory session will explore the fundamentals of digital 3D technology, from 3D scanning and smartphone scanning apps to the basics of Blender and 3D modelling. Participants will learn how to scan and model objects, import them into Blender, and combine scanned and modelled elements to create virtual environments.

Session 2: 3D printing [Sat 17 Oct]

Through this follow-up session, participants will learn about the key aspects of 3D printing, including materials, modelling for print, file preparation and slicing software. By the end of the session, participants will understand how to assess and prepare 3D models and scanned objects for printing, with the opportunity to review and test the printability of their own files.

By the end of the session, participants will

  • Gain hands-on experience using 3D scanning technology and to generate digital scans of physical objects

  • Experiment with 3D scanned files to create digital and/or material art and learn the basics of 3D modelling using free software

  • Understand the workflow for creating 3D prints from the objects we have modelled or scanned during the workshop

enorê

enorê (b. 1992, Rio de Janeiro) is an artist working with digital and material practices to examine the entanglements between virtuality and physical embodiment. Primarily working with 3D printed ceramics, they use clay as a catalyst to question how digital data can be mediated through physical processes, with an interest in clay’s potentiality as a highly temporal material.
